Fund the future

£8,000 keeps the essential work moving each month.

For more than 30 years, Friends, Patrons and supporters have helped keep this remarkable building open, cared for and valued.

The essential £8,000 monthly running cost underpins conservation, security, utilities, maintenance, visitor welcome and specialist advice.

Unrestricted gifts give the Trust flexibility to respond where care is needed most. Specific appeals remain clearly identified so you always know what you are supporting.

How donations have helped

Visible progress, room by room.

Support from individuals and charitable trusts has already enabled significant conservation and interpretation work.

  1. 01

Restored the servants’ garrets, showing where domestic staff lived and worked.

  2. 02

Conserved the intricate striped pattern in the kitchen chamber; further support will help replicate the scheme around the room.

  3. 03

Purchased a dining-room table similar to the one recorded in the 17th-century inventory.

  4. 04

Completed a major roof project designed to keep the building watertight for the next 25 years.

  5. 05

Reopened the exhibition rooms with new displays and interpretation boards.

Specific appeals

From time to time the Trust raises funds for a defined conservation need, such as the chimney appeal.

Sponsor a brick

Restore a vulnerable historic chimney.

This chimney is integral to both the character and structural integrity of The Merchant’s House and requires urgent attention.

Its location above fragile historic fabric means scaffolding cannot place weight on the building. The repair therefore requires complex engineering and bespoke scaffolding designed to straddle the house, bringing the project target to £40,000.

Sponsor a brick for £25 and your contribution will help repair and maintain the house. After your donation, a team member will contact you to confirm the name you would like shown on the Supporters Board.

Appeal governance

Restricted gifts and reporting

Money given specifically to the chimney appeal should be used for the stated purpose or managed in line with charity law if circumstances make that purpose impossible or impracticable.

The stated appeal target is £40,000. The Trust should publish the approved scope, amount raised, project status and any material changes. Contact the Trust for the latest position before making a gift based on a particular timescale.
